Sunday

Sunday

I stayed up late last night though watching movies to see if Mama came home but she didn't. Neither did Joe. This is odd. It reminds me of the time in The Curious Tale of the Dog in the Nighttime when the boy’s mother was missing and he thought that she was dead but she had moved away with the neighbour. But it's not the same. Mama would not move without taking me with her. Also Dad would not tell me my mother was dead if she wasn't. He is a good egg. I am going to ask him a few more questions. And look for clues but pretend that I am not doing that like in Nancy Drew. I remember that after a while her father got mad at her for solving mysteries.

I asked Dad do you know where Mama is? He said no. I asked him why there was blood on the stairs? He said he didn't know and anyway there wasn't because he cleaned it up because Red was licking it. I asked him why he wasn't worried about Mama? He said that she was really mad yesterday and said that she needed space and time to think and so he was giving her that. I said okay. Also I asked should I feed the chickens? He said yes and could I please look after them while Mama was away. I said okay.

The chickens are not my favourite because sometimes they peck at you especially if you are taking their eggs away. Plus chicken poo smells gross but if I wear my boots and some of Mama’s gloves it should be fine. I walked out to the coop and saw that the chickens needed food and water. I threw the hen scratch around like I’ve seen Mama do a hundred times before and gathered up the eggs. There were 15 eggs there and none were broken so I was glad. I filled up their feeders and the water buckets and left them to it. No one actually had pecked me today and my boots weren't too bad. A few of the chickens are special to Mama. She found their eggs out in the yard and moved them into the chicken hospital so that they would hatch out and be safe. Sure enough they did. They were actually the cutest little balls of gray and black and yellow fluff. We kept them safe from possums and raccoons and even rats. Mama really likes looking after them. Seeing those chickens makes me miss her even more.

Another thing about my mother is that people call her the “List Lady”. She wrote a book about different lists that famous people wrote about things they had learned. The book sold well for a while and the one that she wrote was made into a poster. I like it and I have it memorized. It's called “Forty-four Things That I Now Know”. Here are my fourteen favourites:

  1. Being kind is everything.

  2. Sleep is underrated.

  3. Going to the bathroom when you have the chance is a good idea.

  4. Money is hard to make and easy to spend.

  5. It's easy to be in love and harder to love.

  6. When your child is differently abled, every kindness, every slight is doubly felt.

  7. There's not enough laughter in this world.

  8. Attraction is fleeting, love is constant.

  9. Being listened to is one thing, being heard is another, being understood is something else again.

  10. Parenting is all about loss

  11. Whenever possible eat dessert first.

  12. Whenever you think you can't, you probably can.

  13. Nothing and no one is perfect.

  14. Being kind is everything.

Some of them are funny, some are serious but they are mostly helpful. I remember

helping Mama with her list. It was fun. The reason that number one and number fourteen are there twice is because Mama loves kindness. Me too.

I thought that I would walk around a little with Red maybe to the park beside our property just to make sure everything was okay. I didn't want to make Dad mad but I didn't feel okay about Mama. Something wasn’t right. I wanted to know what it was. Also no church for me today because Mama usually takes me. The park was really nice with all the ducks on the pond and wild blackberries to pick. Red loves snuffling around in the grass and barking at the ducks. The ducks were not bothered though. They knew that she could not get them. They were safe.

I miss going to church because I like it there. The people are really nice and huggy and they don’t care if I have seizures or am socially awkward. They like me. Mostly I help the youth pastor with Sunday School. Most of the kids are cute, although some of the older boys seem like they could be mean. The youth pastor is a really nice young guy from the Prairies who is super cool and used to be into skateboarding. Pastor Otis always makes me feel like I am really helping him and he doesn’t care that I have seizures. I have had a couple of seizures at youth church events like the time we went to the trampoline place and I had to go to the hospital in an ambulance. Also once I had a seizure at VBS and no one minded or made a big deal about it. That’s Vacation Bible School in case you don't know.

The little kids at Sunday School remind me of when I was little. I wish that I was still like them. I don’t like growing up. There is too much to know and too many scary things going on. When I was little I had fun and felt safe and other kids would play with me. I had so much fun driving around on my little purple ATV and playing pirate on the old boat my dad fixed up for me in the backyard. And when we got Daisy the pony, I had so much fun riding her and everyone wanted to come to my birthday parties because they were the best parties ever! When you get older that all stops and people start looking at you like you are a weirdo. And maybe you are but that’s no reason to be mean or a bully.

The movie that I watched is one of my favourites. I have 7 favourites:

  1. The Princess Bride

  2. I Am Sam

  3. Groundhog Day

  4. High School Musical 1, 2 & 3

( I count this as one because of seven being my lucky number)

  1.  O Brother, Where Art Thou?

  2. Charlie St. Cloud

  3. 17 Again

It depends what mood I am in which movie I watch. I really needed to be cheered up so I watched High School Musical One and part of Two but then I must have fallen asleep. Red cuddled with me and ate some popcorn too so it was nice.
